Psychotherapeudic Approach |

My therapeutic approach is best described as Integrative. It is my experience that cognitive/behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic/existential perspectives and techniques are complimentary. I incorporate these various interventions to tailor treatment to the specific needs of each individual, couple, or family. Cognitive/Behavorial Therapy is based on the premise that how one thinks determines how one feels and behaves. For example, if one experiences significant anxiety (without any real external threat), it is likely that one is entertaining negative, irrational thought patterns. My job in therapy would be to help this client identify, challenge, and change these thought patterns and beliefs and thereby relieve the anxiety. I might also teach him/her relaxation techniques and coping strategies to further bolster inner stability and calmness. Psychodynamic Therapy involves exploring and revealing unconscious conflicts that usually develop in childhood. Such internal struggles can lead to maladaptive relational patterns that hinder healthy relationships. If, for example, a patient was raised by highly critical or abusive parents, then an internal struggle between desiring love and feeling anger towards the parents might occur. This pattern might continue into adulthood and have a negative effect in relating to others. Psychodynamic therapy would help this individual to express and process the hurt and anger experienced as a child and bring to light more adaptive and fulfilling relational patterns. Humanistic/Existential Therapy extends beyond solving emotional problems and conflicts. This approach addresses the vast untapped potential within us. Therapy, from this perspective, becomes a journey of self-discovery and a process of creating meaning and purpose in one's life. In the example above, if the client were no longer significantly anxious, then he/she might want to explore life purpose, goals, and the steps for achieving these. Visualization, meditation, role-playing, goal setting and time management techniques would help facilitate the client's objectives. Thus, the Integrative approach empowers clients to not only solve personal problems but also to achieve psychological growth and well-being.
